And yes, Steve, this is where snow-covered tundra meets the ice of the Arctic Ocean. There are spots along the coast where rivers flow out into the ocean. The river current tends to cause the ice to shift prematurely (while the rest of the pack ice is still shore-fast) and creates open water at the mouth of the river. I can't say for sure, but I think that is what we are seeing in the photo.
