Something Fun

On my walk home from school yesterday, I noticed two girls on the pond in front of my house. The older girl was a student from my class and the younger was her first grade cousin (my little neighbor & favorite walking buddy). I was really surprised to see that the girls were each sporting a new pair of ice skates. I'd never seen anyone try to ice skate around here, although there is an ice skating rink in Barrow. I took a few pictures of them having fun on the ice. They giggled and squealed as they tried to help one another remain upright. Later, I caught the girls on video as they made their way to the gym for after-school recreation time. Kids seem to have the idea that the pond is some kind of short-cut to the school. I'm not sure that it really is shorter, but there are footprints all along the edge of the ice...a testament to their firmly-held belief.

Here are a few photos...just in case the little video doesn't function as it should. By the time the video was made and the last sunset photo was taken, an ice fog had moved in softening the sunlight into an incredible melding of colors.

Helping Hand 3

Like I said, the little one is my walking buddy. She's cute as a button and could, as they say, talk the hind leg off a mule!

Ice Skating Cousins

This was taken after the ice fog had moved in. Unfortunately, the low-light conditions weren't ideal for my little camera with no settings for such things.

"talk the hind leg off a mule"

Just taking a wild guess, here, but that's not an expression you learned in Atqasuk, is it?

Great photos!

LOL! Probably not. In fact, now that you mention it, I don't think I even learned that expression as a part of any real-life experience in the South (although I'm sure I have picked up many equally impressive sayings). I think I got that expression from the Anne of Green Gables movies...which were supposedly set in Nova Scotia! Ha!

Yes, that saying was from Anne of Green Gables. I always wanted to go to Prince Edward Island because of the movie, but now I also want to take an Alaskan cruise. Video came out just fine.

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to be anonymous, so I wrote back.

Not sure why, but I left (or tried to leave) a comment last night and now it's not here. I wonder if I messed up on the word verification or something like that. Oh well...

The video turned out great - perfect to get a live glimpse of a day in the arctic.

Glad to see a change in the ol' duck-o-meter. We're getting quite a bit of snow too (compared to the last 2 years).

I somehow got to a place that showed ALL the photos on the whole blog - about 6 pages worth - I enjoyed looking at them better that way. I love your photography.

Hey, Jamie! Yep, I know you're an Anne Fan! I have to wonder how many people have actually visited Nova Scotia because of AOGG? It's certainly given me the itch to go there!

Anytime someone mentions that they'd like to take an Alaskan vacation my response is...DO IT, DO IT, DO IT! And the longer you can stay, the better. :)

Hi, Jackie. Yeah, I know that word verification thing can be kind of tricky. It seems to time out pretty quickly and has to refresh (with new characters) before you can post your message. If you don't see a message at the top of the pop-up window stating that your message has been posted or something like that...scroll back down and enter the new letters. That should do it.

I'm so glad that you were able to view the little video! Some people have not been able to get it to work. You're right, it is a "glimpse"...meaning, really short, but I still liked seeing the girls walk casually along in front of that amazing sun. I'm glad you liked it too. :)

I took another picture of The Duck this morning because it had collected a lot more frost, but I hadn't had a chance to switch the photo on the blog. Then, tonight when I left school to go home, I noticed that the snow was really starting to build up on him. So, there's no telling what he'll look like tomorrow. Of course, if the wind picks up he'll get a really close shave!

I'm not sure where or how you viewed the photos, but I'm glad you've enjoyed them! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with me, Jackie. And enjoy your snow! :)

Magnificent. It almost hurts the eyes to look at the sun set. I so very much enjoy the site. You have done a tremendous job. Thanks for sharing.

Hey, Tina! Thanks for dropping by! I am so glad you are enjoying the blog. The sun really is amazing here. Part of it is having absolutely no obstruction of view. The other part is the angle of the sun in the fall and spring. It sits very low in the sky and that really makes a big difference. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's great to hear from you!
