What a Sweet Day!

October 31, 2009

This has been an exceptionally nice day.

It began quite uncharacteristically. I woke up early and still felt great! I can't explain it. There was no good reason for it. It just happened. In spite of staying up late and not feeling well for the past week, there it was. I was awake at 6:25 a.m., without the aid of an alarm clock and didn't feel like I'd been hit by a truck or was being sucked down a gigantic drain.

Amazing!

Is this how morning people feel every day?

My dog wasn't prepared for the early start (he's not a morning person either) and continued to snooze on his bed while I made my favorite scrambled omelet, read, checked my email, and had time to do a leisurely catch-up on almost every blog that I enjoy, including a few new ones that I had never seen before.

That was huge!

It was still dark outside. Only a house or two showed signs of life. No snow machines or four-wheelers buzzing here or there. No dogs barking or kids yelling. Nothing. Just quiet and stillness and the soft glow of streetlights on freshly fallen snow.

Not long after lunch, there came an intermittent pounding on the doors of the four-plex where I live.

Trick-or-Treaters? Already? In the middle of the day?

Yep.

One after another, they kept on coming, some unknown force drawing them away from the warmth of their homes toward hands full of chocolate and Sweet Tarts and bubble gum and toys.

Eventually, I realized that this is the first Halloween that I've spent in this village that didn't fall on a school day. Even when Halloween fell on Saturday, we had Saturday school, so most of our kids are accustomed to trick-or-treating almost immediately after school. Without the confinement of school, they were free to get an early start.

And they did!

One after another, they showed up on my door step with faces sweeter than the candy in their bags.

And tonight is Puuqtaluk!

But that's another story.

You woke up early on a Saturday? I am trying to be a morning person for a job, but I am not one by nature.

Cute trick or treaters! What kind of candy did you give them?

Kristina...
You and me both! I have to wake up early for work, but if left to my own devices I probably wouldn't stir before 8:30 or 9:00...easily. As far as the treats I handed out...everything but the kitchen sink! M&Ms, bubble gum, hard candy, Butterfinger...there was plenty! Some of the smaller kids couldn't even carry their own bags because they were too heavy! :)

I had to laugh at "Is this how morning people feel every day?" I wouldn't have ANY idea, since I HATE mornings, or at least losing sleep to get up early. I think every day should begin about ten, and even then not until I've had a very large, or seven, cup of coffee! I remember when I started my student teaching, I complained about the early start to the school day. My cooperating teacher said, "Oh, eventually you'll get used to it." That was in 1984. Does that fact that I'm not "used to it" yet mean I probably am just not a morning person? Yeah, I thought so!!
GORGEOUS kids. What faces. I'm so glad you took pictures of them!

I've always wondered what it's like to wake up early and feel good LOL I'm such a night owl that mornings are dreaded, unpleasant things.
I have spent hours looking at your blog - the beauty of where you live is amazing.
Snow is such a foreign concept to me!

Thanks for letting me photograph him AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN. He's such a sweet subject! :) Puuqtaluk photos are on the way!

I definitely understand! And it seems like morning people are sometimes just a tad smug about their alertness in the A.M. Of course, I do resemble something very much like a sloth for hours after I wake up, so maybe they have a right to their smugness. :)

Sandcastle Momma...
This early bird thing appears to have been a fluke. Sunday morning everything was back to normal with me dragging myself through the morning.

About the snow...It's amazing, isn't it? The earth tilts a few degrees and BAM we're already below zero and darkness is closing in...while you guys are bright and sunny and probably still sweating!

Hurricane season is just about over, right? That was always a big relief when I lived down South.
