The Day After

Precious in Action!

One dog, five toys, twenty minutes, one very big mess!

Precious and Rudy received a suitcase-full of new toys for Christmas from their wonderful Auntie Elaine. And Precious wasted no time in claiming each toy as her own. Then she spent the next week systematically destroying them one-by-one. At this point in the game, the only thing left is the tiny remnant of an enormous "dinosaur" bone. Not being filled with fluff or any type of squeaky toy has extended its usefulness immensely.

I wish I could report that Precious is a kind-hearted dog that has learned to willingly share toys with my older (less agile) dog, Rudy. But, alas, this has not been the case. If Rudy makes the mistake of even sniffing one of her toys (even the scraps of what once was a toy) Precious swiftly and rather ferociously sets him straight. He doesn't do much about it. He usually just looks up at me with large soulful eyes that very clearly say, "Well...I guess she is the boss of me."

Poor Rudy.

We'll trade! :) With us, the dog toys go relatively unmolested. It is the book that was left up on the table, the measuring cup left in the sink, the pair of shoes slid under the table, that we come home to find has received intense attention. It is always fun, though often frustrating, to come home and hear Laurie's "ohhh Nooooo!"

Yeah, Bryan. Unfortunately, I do understand that frustration as well. I thought that after two years Precious might have outgrown her destructive phase, so I ventured leaving her in the house yesterday while I was at school and then church. Wrong! When I got home I was greeted at the door by my favorite shoes, nothing short of mangled. I shudder to think what I'll find when I get back home today. This afternoon I'll have to dig out the doghouse again and resume our tried and true method of oral deterrence.

What makes it Really frustrating, is that Sasha will go days, weeks, without touching Anything. You think she's grown out of it. Then you come home one day and you can't finish the mystery from the library because the last chapter is now confetti!

Okay, you've got me beat. Precious has destroyed brand new books that I never had the opportunity to read. But, I've never been unable to finish a book because of her appetite for the printed page! I definitely think that would be worse. She did shred a library book the other day. That's going to be an expensive meal. :(
