Kiss the School Year Good-bye!

One of my kids

Thursday was our last day of school. The sense of relief and accomplishment that I should have felt had to be put on hold for a few days while I made a whirlwind trip to Fairbanks. Two planes and five hundred miles later, my summer began by applying for a new passport. If I can get all my ducks in a row...and coax them to stay there...this summer should be an interesting one culminating with a bicycle trip through Nova Scotia at the end of July. Yahoo!

In the meantime, I'm preparing for summer school which begins one week from today. Outside, blowing snow feels more like fall than spring. And the doghouse that I spent hours digging out just a few days ago has disappeared beneath yet another building drift. I know that break-up is near and that summer is on its way, but at the moment it's a little hard to imagine.

Kim,
How long does summer school last? Your bike trip sounds like fun, I hope all your ducks behave and don't mess up your plans. We were hoping to come to Jackie's when you were there this summer, but, it looks like Keith may lose his job. They are talking about closing a couple of the units at the paper mill. That will mean layoffs. The weather here has been cool for this time of the year, but, we are supposed to hit 90* by the weekend. I guess summer is just around the corner.

Hey, Lynn! Summer school will only be for three weeks...7.5 hours a day. I'll be flying to Jackie's on about June 12th and will be back through again the first week of August. School starts for teachers on August 13th. If it does work out that you guys get to visit. I certainly hope nothing happens with Keith's job!!!

Nineties sounds rough, though I know that's nothing for the South in the summer. That's something that I'm not looking forward to experiencing while I'm down that way. I'm perfectly adapted to our cooler weather! :)

Keep me posted about your plans...

To those of us who are trying to scale back the busy-ness in our lives, the artic sounds so enticing, but I guess you can get swamped with busy just as much there. Hold on, summer and a break are coming!

Yes, Bryan. Busyness is no stranger to the Arctic! In spite of our remote location and small staff, we are expected to offer the same things that larger schools down in the Lower 48 do. It's a little bit crazy, actually. And it definitely means that SOMEBODY is going to stay busy most of the time. :) It's just a different kind of busyness.

I have practically ZERO drive time, spend no time in the grocery store, or waiting in line for much of anything. But...I do have walking time and just about anything that we do will require that something be ordered and that means waiting on the internet connection or a telephone salesperson and then waiting on the mail...which means waiting on the planes...which means waiting on the weather...

Yep, wherever you go, if something has to be accomplished...SOMEBODY will probably be busy and more than a little stressed.
