The Last Few Days

Wind and blowing snow have been on our weather menu for about a week now. It's not uncommon to experience an occasional blizzard this time of year, but day after day of this sort of thing is more of a fall phenomenon than spring.

I woke up this morning to the rumbling of big machinery busily clearing drifts from the roads.

That's interesting, because we have had a few days over the past week or so that Laurie and I both commented felt more like fall than spring. An interesting phenomenon that we have noticed more this year than in years past.

That's interesting, Bryan. I guess we're all connnected... atmospherically speaking, that is. :) If I were living down there, I'd be offering up prayers of thanksgiving for anything fall-like that happened to blow through. I'm sure the heat and humidity will show up soon enough!

eysaoxfhIt's hard to believe what I am seeing in the pictures is what you call spring. How long before the snow is gone? I guess as cold as it gets there anything a little warmer would feel like spring. When does fall start? (the snow falling again)

It has been exceptionally cool here this spring also, with little cool snaps, keeping the humidity low. What a blessing it has been. Sad to say, it won't last long.

I'm not sure what happened there. When I did the word verification it wasn't there. Now I know where it went, the beginning of my comment. SORRY

LOL! You had me puzzled there for a minute, Lynn. I thought it was some sort of text message abbreviation! :)

The snow actually started melting a little bit back in April which is very early. But with this kind of weather I guess break-up will be on hold for a little while longer. You're right about this feeling relatively warm compared to winter temperatures. I think it was something like 18 degrees yesterday with a wind chill of -1. If it weren't for the wind and blowing snow, those kids would have been wearing short pants!

Most of the snow is usually gone by the end of May and the river begins to break up around the same time...sometimes into the beginning of June. I think the aerial photo that I have in the sidebar was taken around June 8th or so. You can see that all the water is still frozen, but most of the land is clear of snow. It's a little different every year.

They are currently predicting that this wind/snow will continue for another week, at least. Planes have not been making their stops here. That means no freight, no mail, no travel in or out. I'm really glad that I don't need to go anywhere right now! :)

Oh, I forgot to answer your question about fall. Flowers and grass are usually growing well by the end of June and through July. The mosquitoes get pretty bad by mid to late July, but they are on their way out by August. We usually get our first snow in late August, but the ground doesn't freeze until late September or early October. The lakes and rivers are usually frozen enough to walk on by late October or early November. Summer is definitely short and looks more like early spring than summer if you go by southern standards. Our early fall has a lot in common with TX/LA WINTERS!
